What is a "stenographer"?
   A court reporter


Why did Sholes send a prototype of his typewriter to Clephane?
   He noticed that stenographers would be likely to use this the most.
After the typewriter began production, why did Clephane pursue another machine?
   He realized that this type was not solving all of his problems.
